Screening Criteria for Artist Applicants

Artwork is judged as a collection rather than each piece judged independently.

Artwork must be:

  • well designed

  • expertly executed

  • demonstrate a personal artistic identity

  • present a unified body of work

  • impeccably presented

Six distinct criteria are used as the basis for each juror’s evaluation. There is an expectation that the applicant is strong in each category:

 1.  Aesthetic Concepts: Overall aesthetic quality, form, and surface treatment.

     Is the work integrated?

Does the work have an emotional impact and vitality?

Can the artist produce consistently interesting and aesthetic work?

2. Craftsmanship: Technical mastery and control of materials.

3. Presentation: “Gallery Ready”

Is the work neat, complete, and ready to hang in the gallery as presented?

4. Personal Identity:

How is the artist’s personal vision expressed in the work?

Has the artist developed a personal style/expression?

Is the work original in concept?

Is the entire body of work professional and consistent?

5. Quality:

Is the artist’s work at a professional level?

Is the work consistent with the Guild membership standards?

6. Fit:

Can the applicant fulfill the responsibilities of AGS membership as defined in Guild Artists Benefits and Obligations?
