Arts Guild of Sonoma announces winners of the 2025 Annual Juried show: “Past-Present-Future”

Grand Prize went to Bill Buranich for his piece, Marquan

Amy Nelder, show juror from Chloe Gallery in SF, wrote about how this piece was chosen for this show:

Bill Buranich's compelling piece Marquanperfectly embodies the theme of the show, Past, Present, Future - the commemorating portrait of a friend who passed (past), the present nature of both those left behind (the living artist), the present states of grief, the inherent present nature of a medium implying a sense of found objects (the cardboard), the young, hypercontemporary sensations of the medium (spray paint on cardboard); future: the transience of the cardboard medium, which will degrade over time ahead, leaving both the artist and the viewer behind with the lingering cycle of memory all over again.

The execution of the piece is exquisite: the realism is high and the composition balanced, and the use of the mediums is philosophically brilliant: not only the artist's choice of distilling the shadows and shapes with a sense of occam's razor, but his use of the cardboard itself not only as a surface, but also the negative space as a pigment in itself in the right side of the face and areas of the shoulder, making the face even more a part of the process of the painting , blurring the lines between the portrait and the spotlight on the transience of the paper medium and the sensations of the passage of time through this cycle of a memory that begins and moves repeatedly through the future and back to the past.

First of two Honorable Mentions went to Debbie Vogel for her piece, Philomene

Second of two Honorable Mentions went to Mary Neuer Lee for her piece, See the Light
